A few thoughts from my own experience and hope they are helpful to you:

1. The best way to master a new word is to try to put it in use. Rather than repeatedly reciting the spelling and meanings of a word, try to use it in sentences and put it in context.
2. You can use any materials to help you improve your English vocabulary, but they should be monolingual (here, English only), as it forces you to think and learn in English. The material can be a novel or a news article that interests you, or you can use some vocabulary builders. Some good ones include Word Power Made Easy and Verbal Advantage.
3. You should have one or two good English dictionaries at hand so that you can quickly look up new words whenever you see them. The Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English is a great option for English learners. If you find yourself continue to run into words that you can't find in the LDOCE, you may need a "bigger" dictionary, such as the American Heritage of English Dictionary. Again, try to resist the temptation to buy English-Chinese dictionaries, you will end up reading the Chinese explanations only. Use a monolingual English dictionary.
4. Last but not the least, don't forget to learn the correct pronunciation of the new words that you studied. Many ESL learners overlook it, but you have spent so much time trying to remember a word and its many meanings, why not also learn to pronounce it correctly?
